Publicity Chair & MB Coord., Troop 07

Want to learn a new skill, explore a new hobby or learn more about your community, nation or world?  On Saturday, Oct. 18, Troop 7 hosted their bi-annual Merit Badge Marathon. Included in the activities were several scouts from BSA Troop 102 which made for a fine turnout.  The Marathon offered scouts a chance to work on merit badges and explore new subjects that may not be ordinarily available to them.

The hi-light of the day was the Aviation Merit Badge.  Thanks to the efforts of parents and Aviation Merit Badge Counselors, Philip Brennan and Curtis Lenderman, USAF Fighter Pilot Lt. Col. Norman ‘Neil’ Dimond was contacted and provided a most dynamic presentation on the workings of aircraft in use today.  The instruction included lots of technical information on aircraft design, how lift is generated, and effects of altitude, but also included plenty of opportunity to ask questions and even try on Lt. Col. Dimond’s flight helmet.

As a Flight Commander with experience in over 50 combat missions and numerous Homeland Defense missions in the F-16, his instructions were intense but filled with personal experience. He discussed the numerous career opportunities available in aviation and shared his own history of achievements…very impressive!

Parents, teachers and community members play a huge role in offering their time as counselors. A big thanks to all who willingly volunteered throughout the day in helping the scouts acquire new skills, explore career fields and develop confidence with the skills they may already possess;  Trudi Dibb, Communications,  Mike Holt, Personal Fitness, Tawnya Hartberger,  Citizenship in the World, Brenda Korn, Cooking and Tom Hartberger, Citizenship in the Nation.
